I come from a ridiculously wealthy bubble within Los Angeles called La Canada. During the housing crash of 2008, I was relocated to La Crescenta, the less privileged town next door. Despite the move, I was able to attend school in La Canada from kindergarten through high school. In a pursuit of independence, I left for Boston University after graduation. Shortly after, I returned to LA to shift from special education teaching to human resources management.
I am going to the Head of Human Resources at either Six Flags Magic Mountain or Disneyland. Afterwards, I will go back to USC as an adjunct professor in either sociology or HR because my purpose is to help eager students learn how to become leaders.
I will get there by attending my internship this summer and continuing to receive high marks in school. I am also creating a new social theory, so I can graduate with honors. By being more marketable and knowledgeable, I will achieve my goals faster. Once I find a career that appeals to me, I will rise in the ranks until I reach late adulthood. Then I will use my knowledge to transition to teaching.
I am like my parents because they are organized and have high expectations for themselves and those that surround them; however, I am unlike them because I love academics and want to immerse myself in work in addition to being a mother. I also plan on having a strong family in which I stay married to my partner, unlike my divorced parents.
I have extremely high expectations for myself because I enjoy pushing myself to find my maximum potential. Although I feel pressure to continue earning perfect marks from my family, partner, and peers who also earn perfect marks, I am internally fueled to complete my goals and fulfill my purpose.
My partner's parents serve as a role model for me because they grew up in difficult circumstances, one as the child of an immigrant from Iran and the other from a broken and poverty-stricken family. They began working at a young age, rapidly rose up the ranks of a large corporation together, and reached retirement age around 45. They are happily married and raised equally as successful children. They have an amazing balance of personal responsibility and great passion which I aspire to achieve.
I feel a special connection with alligators. They live both on land and in water which is something I literally connect with due to my passion for running and water polo. Alligators are also similar to me because they are strong, powerful, and calculated. They know how to perceive their surroundings which is important to me as a strategist and sociologist.
Lastly, my first house in La Canada had a beautiful orange tree that held up my baby swing. It symbolizes happy moments of my united family who was eager about our future. I would sit in the swing and feel the wind on my face as my mother lightly pushed me. We would watch my brother and father throw a ball or play on the much larger swing tied to a gigantic pine tree a few feet away. Eventually, I outgrew the small swing. Bees and ants found a new home on its fresh blossoms and delicious fruit. As my family began to disintegrate, the tree became a painful reminder. It was chopped down, but my young innocence traded sadness for excitement because now I had more room to run.

I like this post a lot! I actually was looking into going to BU and so I think it's cool to see someone who has tranffered from there. You also seem super motivated to achieve all of your life goals. Go get it!
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents and ex-girlfriend used to live in La Canada/La Crescenta area so I've been there a lot. It's really a nice neighborhood. Also, it'd be really cool to become the head HR at Disneyland or Six Flags. Hope it works out well for you!
ReplyDeleteI love how you are so motivated and I love how you took as your inspiration your grandparents because I do to. My grandparents are one of my biggest role model since they also started from scratch. Hope you'll accomplish everything you dream.
ReplyDeleteI also spend the first two years of my college at Boston. I studied at Boston College but the weather was too cold in the winter. So I moved to LA afterwards. I admire that you know exactly what you want and how to get there! Super organized and goal oriented.
ReplyDeleteMy dad is an HR professional of nearly three decades and is currently in a transition where he is taking on some teaching roles at various universities. He absolutely loves it, and I'd be happy to connect you with him if you'd like to know more about his experience.
ReplyDeleteHi Campbell! Thank you so much for your heartfelt narrative about who you are as a person. I think your determination and will to succeed will absolutely get you where you want to go. Your account of the Orange Tree and the journey of that tree is both beautiful and encouraging. I would wish you luck on your future endeavors but I’m not sure you need it!
ReplyDeleteHi Campbell! Your motivation and determination is so inspiring. I loved your story about the orange tree and the significance of it in your life. The description is beautifully detailed.
